Did two rides this weekend on steel - the old mid-60s Carleton bike I found at the dump a year or so ago. About all that's left of the bike is the frame, but I read in several places that these hand-made frames - with nice lugs and butting - were good candidates for upgrades. So I had some Araya 700c wheels and a fairly modern Shimano crank. All I really needed was the brifters and derailers, those I found at a jumble sale sponsored by a bike club. Everything else I needed was in the spares bin. Oh, I did pick up a set of Continental racing slicks at that same sale. The tan sidewalls go well with the antique vibe.

Anyway, I built it up a year or so ago and other than a few test rides, never did much with it except mount it on a spare Vetta trainer. So I dusted it off and made a few adjustments just for the hell of it. It's a nice ride, very smooth. Adjusting to the klunky Shimano 7-speed from my usual Campy 10-speed was quicker than expected. And, actually, riding on the track was just a case of finding the gear for the speed I wanted and leaving it there.

Good rides, some wind challenges. My hamstring continues to heal. It throbs a bit but is no longer painful. Today my bum is a bit stiff, always a sign of a good long ride.
